How to auto-send DMs to Instagram commenters (2026)
Set up Instagram comment-to-DM: send a private message to everyone who comments a keyword, with a public reply, a tracked link and Instagram's rules explained.

You've seen it on every creator's Reels: "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you." A minute later, the commenter has a DM with the link. That's comment-to-DM automation, and it's one of the few growth tactics on Instagram that helps the algorithm and your conversions at the same time. Comments signal interest to Instagram, and the DM puts your link where people actually click it.
This guide shows how comment-to-DM works, what Instagram allows, and how to set it up with Postoni's Auto-DM in a few minutes.
Key takeaways
- Comment-to-DM sends a private reply to someone who commented on your post, usually triggered by a keyword like LINK or GUIDE.
- It needs a Business or Creator account and a tool that uses Instagram's official messaging API. Personal accounts can't do it.
- Instagram allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days. Once the person answers, you can keep the conversation going for 24 hours after each of their messages.
- Add a public reply under the comment, a button before the link, and a once-per-person limit to keep it human and spam-free.
How comment-to-DM works
Behind the scenes, there are four steps:
- Someone comments on your post or Reel.
- Instagram notifies your automation tool through a webhook, within a second or two.
- The tool checks the comment against your rules: which post, which keywords, has this person already been messaged.
- If it matches, the tool replies under the comment ("Sent you a DM!") and sends a private reply to the commenter's inbox.
The private reply arrives as a message request or in the primary inbox, depending on whether the person follows you. If they tap a button or answer, a normal conversation opens and you can send the link, ask for an email, or hand over to a person.
What Instagram allows (and what it doesn't)
Instagram's messaging API has a few rules every tool has to follow. Knowing them saves you from automations that silently fail.
- Professional accounts only. Switch to a Business or Creator account in Settings and activity → Account type and tools. It's free and you can switch back.
- One private reply per comment, within 7 days. You can't send a second unprompted DM to the same comment, and you can't DM people who commented weeks ago.
- The 24-hour window. After someone messages you (including tapping a button), you can reply for 24 hours. Follow-ups scheduled later than that won't be delivered, so good tools stop them.
- People must start it. Automations only work for people who interacted with you first: a comment, a Story reply, a mention or a DM. Cold outreach isn't possible, and that's a good thing.
- Allow message access. In the Instagram app, under Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools, make sure Allow access to messages is on. Without it, Instagram won't deliver messages to any tool.
Set up comment-to-DM with Postoni
Auto-DM is built into Postoni and included in every plan. If you already schedule Instagram posts with Postoni, you're halfway there.
Connect Instagram and allow messaging
Connect your Business or Creator account in Postoni (through Instagram login or the Facebook Page it's linked to). Open Auto-DM and click Enable on the account. Postoni asks Instagram for messaging permission and subscribes to your comments and messages.
Create an automation
Click New automation and pick Comment on a post. Start from a template such as "Send a link" or "Grow your email list" if you want a head start.
Choose the post and keywords
Pick a specific post or Reel, your next post (handy when you're about to publish), or any post. Then choose how to match: any comment, comments that contain a word, or an exact keyword. Matching ignores case, accents and emoji, so "Link!!" and "link 🙏" both count.
Write the public reply and the DM
Add two or three public reply variations so your comments don't all say the same thing. Write the opening DM with a button ("Send me the link"), then the message with your link. Use
{first_name}to personalize. The phone preview shows exactly what people will see.Test and switch it on
Run the built-in test to see which automation a comment would trigger, then switch it on. Comment from a second account to watch it work.
Why the button matters
You could send the link straight away. Most experienced creators don't, for two reasons.
It opens the conversation window. When the person taps the button, that counts as a message from them. That unlocks the 24-hour window, so you can send the link, a follow-up, or ask a question.
It improves deliverability and trust. A friendly "Want the link?" with a button feels like a conversation, not spam. People who tap are genuinely interested, which shows in your click-through rate.
Postoni tracks each step: the DM was sent, the person opened it (tapped the button or replied), and clicked the link. Links go through a short tracked redirect, and unique clicks count each person once, so a curious commenter tapping five times doesn't inflate your stats.
Make it convert: five settings worth using
Follow to unlock
Ask people to follow you before you send the freebie. Postoni checks whether they follow, sends the link if they do, and asks again (with a "I followed" button) if they don't. Use it for valuable resources. For small giveaways it can feel pushy.
Email or phone capture
Ask for an email in the chat: "Where should I send the full guide?" Postoni validates the address, saves it to the contact, and can tag them. Export contacts to CSV or send each new lead to Zapier, Make or your CRM with a webhook step.
Once per person
Turn on once per user for giveaways and lead magnets. People who comment twice won't get a second DM, and Postoni never sends two DMs for the same comment, even if Instagram delivers the webhook twice.
A short delay
A few seconds of delay before the public reply and DM looks more natural than an instant answer. Set it once for the account in Auto-DM settings.
Hand over to a person
Every conversation lands in the Postoni inbox. When you reply yourself, automations pause for that person for 24 hours, so you never talk over each other.
Beyond comments
The same automation can start from other places:
- Story replies: "Reply GUIDE to this Story."
- Story mentions: thank everyone who mentions you, automatically.
- DM keywords: someone messages "PRICE" and gets your price list.
- ig.me links: a link in your bio, ad or QR code that opens a DM and starts a specific flow.
- Ice breakers: the questions people see when they open a chat with you for the first time.

Measure what's working
Open Auto-DM → Overview to see the funnel for every automation and every post: comments matched, DMs sent, opened, unique clicks and leads. If a DM fails, the activity log shows Instagram's exact error, for example a person who has restricted messages, so you know whether to fix something or ignore it.
A good benchmark to aim for: most of your DMs opened, and a solid share of those clicking. If opens are low, rewrite the first DM. If clicks are low, make the button and the promise more specific.
Comment-to-DM and your schedule
The best time to set up an automation is when you schedule the post. In Postoni, you can attach an Auto-DM while composing an Instagram post: add the keyword and the DM, and the automation switches on the moment the post goes live. No copying post links at 9 pm. Pair it with how to schedule Instagram posts and your whole launch runs itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is comment-to-DM allowed on Instagram?
Yes, when it uses Instagram's official messaging API. Meta built private replies for exactly this. Tools that log in with your password or automate a browser are not allowed and can get your account restricted.
Can I DM everyone who commented on an old post?
Only comments from the last 7 days can get a private reply, and only one per comment. Automations work best on new posts, or on your next post.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
No. You can connect with Instagram login. If your account is already linked to a Facebook Page, you can connect through the Page instead. Both support Auto-DM.
Why didn't someone get my DM?
Common reasons: their privacy settings restrict messages, they already got a DM for that automation, the comment didn't match your keyword, or messaging access is off in your Instagram settings. The Auto-DM activity log shows the exact reason for every comment.
How much does Postoni Auto-DM cost?
It's included in every Postoni plan, with no per-contact fees. See pricing for plans.
