There is no single best social media scheduler. There is the one that covers your networks, fits your team and doesn't charge you for things you never use. This guide compares 11 tools we think are worth a look in 2026, including our own, and tries to be straight about where each one is strong and where it isn't.

Key takeaways

  • For most small teams, a per-plan tool (Postoni, Postiz Cloud, SocialBee) is cheaper than per-seat tools once you add a second person.
  • Buffer is still the easiest starting point for one person with three channels or fewer, thanks to its free plan.
  • Hootsuite and Sprout Social make sense when you need social listening, inbox and enterprise reporting, and you have the budget.
  • If you want an AI assistant to draft and schedule for you, look for MCP (Model Context Protocol) support. Few tools have it.

How we tested

We signed up for each tool, connected the same set of accounts where the tool allowed it, and scheduled a week of posts: a short text post, an image post, a LinkedIn post with a link, and a short video. We looked at five things:

  1. Networks. How many networks can it publish to directly, without a "reminder" workaround?
  2. Free plan. Is there a plan you can use indefinitely without paying?
  3. Price for 10 channels. The cheapest list price on monthly billing for 10 connected channels and two people.
  4. AI and MCP. Can an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT schedule posts through the tool? MCP is an open standard that lets AI apps use outside tools, so it's the clearest signal here.
  5. Post limits. Does the plan cap how many posts you can schedule?

1. Postoni

Postoni is a managed social media scheduler built on the open-source Postiz project. It publishes to 30+ networks, from the big ones (Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok) to newer and decentralised ones like Bluesky, Mastodon and Nostr, plus community channels such as Discord and Telegram.

Who it's for: small teams and agencies who post to many networks and don't want per-seat pricing. It's also built for working with AI assistants: Postoni has a hosted MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other AI agents can draft, schedule and read back posts for you, with approvals so a person signs off first.

Pricing: Solo is $29 a month for 5 channels and one user. Team is $39 for 10 channels with unlimited users and approvals. Agency is $49 for 30 channels, and Enterprise is $99 for 100 channels. Every plan has unlimited posts. There's a 7-day free trial, but no free plan. See pricing for yearly discounts.

Trade-offs: no social listening or unified inbox, and analytics are lighter than the enterprise tools.

2. Buffer

Buffer is the friendliest place to start. The interface is calm, the free plan covers three channels with a cap on scheduled posts, and paid plans are priced per channel.

Who it's for: solo creators and very small businesses on a few networks. Trade-offs: per-channel pricing adds up fast, and the Team plan roughly doubles the per-channel price. At 10 channels and two people you're looking at around $120 a month at the time of writing. Our Buffer alternatives guide goes deeper, and there's a direct Buffer comparison.

3. Hootsuite

Hootsuite is one of the oldest tools in the category and goes well beyond scheduling: social listening, a shared inbox, ads, and detailed reporting.

Who it's for: larger marketing teams that use those extras every day. Trade-offs: pricing is per user and starts around $149 a month per seat at the time of writing, with no free plan. If you mostly need a calendar, you're paying for a lot you won't use. See our Hootsuite alternatives roundup.

4. Later

Later started as an Instagram planner and still shines there: a visual grid planner, link-in-bio pages, and good support for Reels and TikTok. It has since expanded into influencer marketing.

Who it's for: visual brands focused on Instagram and TikTok. Trade-offs: pricing is based on "social sets" (one profile per network), so covering many networks or brands gets expensive, and newer networks like Bluesky and Mastodon aren't supported. Compare it with Postoni on the Later alternative page.

5. Publer

Publer covers a lot of networks for the price, with a free plan, bulk scheduling, a link-in-bio tool and post recycling.

Who it's for: budget-conscious freelancers and small businesses who want many networks. Trade-offs: pricing is per account on top of a base fee, which makes it hard to quote a single number, and the interface is busier than Buffer's. See the Publer alternative page.

6. Metricool

Metricool leans into analytics. It combines scheduling with competitor tracking, ads reporting for Meta, Google and TikTok, and good looking client reports. There's a free plan for one brand.

Who it's for: marketers who report to clients or managers and want scheduling and analytics in one place. Trade-offs: plans are priced per brand, and the scheduling side is less flexible for heavy multi-network posting. See the Metricool alternative page.

7. SocialBee

SocialBee organises posts into content categories and can recycle evergreen posts automatically, which is great if you run a steady stream of tips, quotes and blog promos.

Who it's for: solopreneurs and small businesses with a library of evergreen content. Trade-offs: no free plan (it starts around $29 a month at the time of writing), and the category system takes some setup. See the SocialBee alternative page.

8. Sprout Social

Sprout Social is the enterprise pick: an excellent unified inbox, customer care workflows, listening and polished reporting.

Who it's for: brands with dedicated social care teams and a real budget. Trade-offs: it's the most expensive tool here, around $199 to $299 per seat a month at the time of writing, depending on the plan. For two people and 10 profiles, that's roughly $600 a month. See the Sprout Social alternative page.

9. Typefully

Typefully is a writing tool first. It has a distraction-free editor, threads, and scheduling for X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, plus useful writing analytics.

Who it's for: founders and writers who live on text networks. Trade-offs: it doesn't try to cover Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, so most brands need something else alongside it. See the Typefully alternative page.

10. Planable

Planable is built around collaboration: posts look like real previews, and clients or managers can comment and approve right on them.

Who it's for: agencies whose biggest pain is getting client sign-off. Trade-offs: its strengths are review and approval rather than broad network coverage or automation. See the Planable alternative page.

11. Postiz (self-hosted)

Postiz is the open-source project Postoni is built on. You can run it on your own server for free, with the same 30+ network integrations and an MCP server. There's also a hosted Postiz Cloud.

Who it's for: developers and teams who want full control of their data and are happy to run Docker, a database and a few background services. Trade-offs: you set up each network's developer app yourself, and you're on the hook for updates, backups and fixing things when a network changes its API. We wrote a full breakdown in Postiz self-hosted vs hosted.

What will it cost you?

Pricing models differ so much (per channel, per seat, per brand, per plan) that the only fair comparison is your own numbers. Set your channel count and team size:

How to choose

Start from what you actually do every week, not from feature lists.

  1. List your networks

Write down every network you post to, and the ones you plan to add this year. Rule out tools that don't publish to them directly.

  2. Count people, not just channels

If more than one person schedules or approves posts, per-seat pricing will probably dominate your bill. Per-plan tools usually win here.

  3. Decide if you need the extras

Listening, a shared inbox and ads reporting are real reasons to pay for Hootsuite or Sprout. If you won't use them weekly, skip them.

  4. Check how you want to work with AI

If you already draft with Claude or ChatGPT, a tool with an MCP server lets the assistant schedule directly instead of you copying and pasting. Our guide to scheduling posts with Claude shows what that looks like.

  5. Run a one-week trial

Schedule a real week of posts. You'll learn more from that than from any comparison, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free social media scheduler?

Buffer's free plan is the simplest for up to three channels. Publer, Metricool, Typefully and Planable also have free plans with different limits. If you can run a server, self-hosted Postiz is free and has no channel cap.

Which social media scheduler supports the most networks?

Postiz and Postoni, which is built on it, publish to 30+ networks, including Bluesky, Mastodon, Nostr, Farcaster, Discord, Telegram, Reddit and blogging platforms. Most other tools cover 8 to 13.

Does Postoni have a free plan?

No. Postoni has a 7-day free trial and paid plans from $29 a month. All plans include unlimited posts.

Can AI schedule social media posts for me?

Yes, if your scheduler has an MCP server. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants can then draft posts and add them to your calendar, ideally as drafts that a person approves before they go out.
